Fragrance is a tricky thing: wear too much and you're an @!$%#. Wear any at all, and you might get cancer. Didn't you know? That's why they call it Eternity.

Ten sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches, and contact dermatitis. Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio contained 19 different sensitizing chemicals, more than any other product in the study.
Four hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption, and cancer. Halle by Halle Berry, Quicksilver and Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow each contained seven different chemicals with the potential to disrupt the hormone system.
A recent EWG study found synthetic musk chemicals Galaxolide and Tonalide in the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants. The musk chemicals were found in nearly every fragrance analyzed for this study. Twelve of the 17 products also contained diethyl phthalate (DEP), a chemical linked to sperm damage and behavioral problems that has been found in the bodies of nearly all Americans tested.

I believe this? Every time I'm around someone who wears fragrances other than natural oils, my sinuses and throat starts to burn and I start coughing, my eyes burns and tear and if I don't get away from them right away, I'll develop a headache. If I have a this type of reaction to fragrances, can you imagine the long term effects the wearer will experience! If I had my way no one would wear artificial fragrances.

It's not just in those we wear either. Asthma sufferers have to use fragrance free cleaning products and laundry soap. We've switched to all organic products with no scents added for this reason.

You're right about that! We're using a mixture of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda and Borax in the laundry and for household cleaning. Since we made the switch, everyone in the house is breathing easier.

We gave up on all scented products years ago. If it is scented, we refuse to buy it.
There are shops in the mall where I won't go: any that sell scented candles, etc.; the perfume departments of all the stores, and so on.
There is one Jewelers where a clerk wears something really toxic; in less than 30 seconds, I start coughing and sneezing so badly I have to leave. Every now and then I try returning, but before I can ask them to show me something, I start coughing and sneezing and I have to leave. I've never been able to stay in that store long enough to buy anything.
I really think artificial scents should be illegal. They're probably every bit as toxic as cigarette smoke... and yet people are forced sometimes into small, enclosed spaces with others who are drowning in some horrid scent (elevators are the worst) - and some scents are so bad that I will react even if I am several feet away from the source.
I just wish something could be done about it, because, for many of us, it is a huge problem.

I agree.

Ah, yeah. I'm one of those "canary in a coal mine" people who react badly to pretty much everything. In addition to perfume, I also get sick from all kinds of other things (VOCs like paint fumes, new carpet fumes and food additives like MSG). I have a long list of things that cause me physical symptoms ranging from simple things like headaches, disorientation, lethargy and nausea to more distressing and expensive things like contact dermatitis, bloody UTIs (requiring a doctor's visit), heart palpitations and severe gastro-intestinal distress (you don't want to know).
So, yeah. Quit with the unnecessary chemicals already.

So do I!

Wow...I didn't realize they were this disrupting...now I think I'll think twice on most scented items and perfumes...

Sometimes it's difficult to believe that something that smells so nice, can be so toxic!

I am currently going partly insane trying to find a shampoo and conditioner that doesn't leave everything from my shoulders up itching and burning all day long. What I used to use is no longer available and all the unscented alternatives (including my own home-made shampoo) have so far left my hair gummy and tangled. I might have to just suck it up for the week or two it takes to adjust to the "no-poo" regime.
