Scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University, in northern England, found continued wear of high heels caused the Achilles' tendon to thicken and stiffen permanently, so calf muscles were forced to stretch painfully when switching to flat shoes.

The high heel wearers, who complained of discomfort when they switched to flats, were found to have muscle fibers 13 percent shorter than the women in flats.

“If you wear high heels for two years or more, five times a week, muscle fibers will become shorter and tendons will thicken and stiffen,” Professor Marco Narici, who led the research, told NewsCore.

“This has an immediate effect in restricting ankle movement and impacts your ability to walk fast and run — both in heels and flats.”

Wow, so that is what happened to me! Now, I know!

I used to wear heels all the time, but can't now, because of arthritis-- :-)

thanks for the lovely article!

I wore heels every day for years. I've never noticed a problem with my legs or feet. I guess I'm lucky?

I don't wear heels because I don't want to die.

I think that anyone who thinks that they have to wear heels is full of BS. The whole 'women should look good' stuff is ridiculous. Beauty is only skin deep, (or at least it used to be before breast augmentation was discovered.)

Of course if you wear heels for years and then switch to flats it is going to make a difference.... don't you remember when you first started wearing heels and it hurt like hell to wear them? The body adapts to almost everything you do to it.

I refuse to wear heels. They are not practical. They are dangerous to my physical well-being. If I was supposed to be taller, I guess I would have grown more huh?

Just like when we were kids and dad said not to have your hands in your pockets when walking on the ice............ heels have no place in a common sense world.

I have a coworker who is 5'1" who thinks she has to wear heels. In nearly 5 years I have only seen her in flats at work one time.

Don't get me started on breast augmentation. Unless it's reconstruction, I'm opposed. I once had a coworker who got augmentation and invited me to feel them (let's not even ADDRESS the inappropriateness of that invitation from a coworker). Of course at my current age I would have recognized such an invitation as being much more, but back then I was young and stupid.

LOL!

I like heels. I like wearing dresses. It makes me feel good. But kudos for you that you don't let others dictate what you wear! I think that's great!

If I haul out the heels, somebody is either getting married or buried, or it is a scorching-hot date. Can I wear them? You betcha, Momma taught me to walk a balance beam on them when I was a kid. DO I wear them? Rarely.

I love heels and I wear them often. This last week I was on vacation in Las Vegas. Wanting to be sensible I packed lots of glitzy sandals and flip flops. My feet have never hurt so bad. I actually had to put my heels back on to alleviate some of the discomfort I was feeling.

Loretta this article comes in very handy and is so timely for me.

The odd thing is though, I never notice the pain when in running or walking shoes, just flats.

Arch support maybe?

Tennis shoes often have higher heels than toes, so perhaps that helps.

I've never worn heels except on cowboy boots. Those aren't made for walking. The purpose of the heel is to keep your foot from sliding through the stirrup. Besides, they're short.

The only time I ever tried to wear fashion heels was at my ninth grade graduation. Mom insisted. Hated them as much as I hated dresses. Ditched high heels as soon as that graduation was over and never donned another pair. Ditched dresses as soon as I left high school. Haven't worn one since.

Good for you! =) I wish I was more like that, but I have this sickness it's called Girly-Girl. Love the heels, jewelry, gowns, perfumes and make up.

It's not a sickness unless you are harming your own health or are obsessed with it.

I'm into a more robust life than those things allow, so they hold no interest for me. It's real hard to be comfortable on a horse in gowns and heels. Love water sports. They aren't appropriate there either. Always worked outdoors. Heels are good for aerating the ground but that handiness makes it hard to walk. They aren't much good when building fences, cleaning corrals, etc. Gowns don't do well in a soil intensive area. Make up sweats off too soon to make it worth while. Perfume attracts bees and wasps. Jewelry is dangerous. My dad almost had his finger taken off when a ring got caught in a pony's mane as it ran away.

I'm assuming your lifestyle is different than mine, so your choices are different than mine.

I bought some cute flip flop like sandals just to wear to the beach and around the yard and pool. I cannot wear those things! They hurt me so bad! I think it's the combination of no heel strap, and no arch support. I've got high arches.

I'm thinking it is the arch thing also...I have super high arches!

Loretta I am also an outdoors girl. I love horses, water skiing and gardening. LOL you have given my an idea for aerating my lawn in a pair of heels though! I'm just going to have to do it at night soo the neighbors don't think I've completely lost it.;)

Are you going to wear a gown or negligee while aerating? Would be fitting, don't you think?

My neighbors know I lost it years ago, so I don't worry about that. My worry is how do I find it.

As a man, I can say in all truthfulness that if a Lady is built for heals, and wears them, it is a sight like no other.

Given that, I absolutely DO NOT advocate my wife wear heels except on special occasions. And on those occasions, I will not plan on her being upright in them for more that 30 (that's right, thirty) minutes total in any 24 hour period. This means theatre, dinners, parties with chairs, everything. If at all possible, she does not walk...she rides......to where we need to go.

High heels (here I refer to the about 3 1/2 - 4" variety that non-waif females can wear) are very, very hard on female feet. So, given any input at all, I advocate them only for short periods, and otherwise suggest standard "no-heel" shoes so as to keep the foot in a more normal posture, and not damage bones, tendons, or muscles.

Like hot sauce, some recipes really benefit from the "kick", but it IS NOT a main ingredient, and should not be used more the sparingly in any recipe that is actually meant for human consumption.

Gentlemen, if you really like your Lady in heels....take a good picture, hang it up, and save your Lady a lot of unnecessary pain.

I hope this meets the satisfaction of all concerned as a way to appreciate something that can be beautiful to behold, and not get anyone hurt in the process.

There is also the undeniably difficult process of actually finding a pair of "classic heels" in a forest of fetish shoes and stuff that is, well, "not-classic". This I never thought would be so hard.....and YES, I found my wife almost all of the fashion heels she has, and we did it "trial and error", throwing out the ones that didn't fit at all, and keeping the ones that both looked good, could be walked in, and worn without immediate pain setting in. Far easier said than done......

All such referred to heels can be "worn to church" and are not fetish types.....

High heels are a conspiracy by podiatrists to drum up business.

I equate heels with the bound feet of Chinese women. They were considered very attractive by men even though they caused the women great pain and resulted in living a crippled life.

I always thought they looked silly. As well as looking uncomfortable and, frankly, dangerous. They're a leading cause of foot and ankle injuries.

Here's a couple of video you might want to see. The first one is mostly about rain, but if you fast forward to 1:02, you'll see someone courting injury in high heels:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT8PLdjSkkY

The second one makes me wonder how anyone can say high heels make legs sexy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbpKHjpTcUk&NR=1

But I have to admit this story really wasn't anything I ever expected to read:

2 Men Hospitalized After 30 Women Beat Them With High Heel Shoes ...

I remember reading about a man that beat a transvestite to death with his/her high heels and put the heel right through the skill.

So ladies, if you're ever in a dark parking lot at night going home from work and a creep attacks. Always remember that you do indeed have a weapon to protect yourself with. They're on your feet!

Why does someone always have to post some glorified piece of homophobia just as one wonders what two men did to arouse the rage of several women. .

I disagree. It's a fact, not hearsay. A homophobic A-hole killed a tranny with his own shoes and put the heel right through his skull. Shoes can definitely be used as a deadly weapon, literally!

Now, if your talking about the nut job that did it? Oh yes! Absolutely an ignorant homophobes and I don't remember reading what happened, how long he got. But I hope he got life at least.
