Why Queer Women Cannot, By Definition, Be Sluts

There's a crucial difference between a straight slut and a queer slut, and it's the shame factor. But it's not shame in the way you might think.

Presumably, queer women who are cool with calling themselves a "slut" base their queer-sluthood on number of partners -– such is the case in Jaclyn Friedman's recent heat-scoring piece "My Sluthood, Myself," in which Friedman assesses her straight-slutting on the same terms she does her casual sex with women -– in her estimation, it all adds up to one big slutty statistic. But I'd argue that when it comes to gauging one's overall sluttiness, volume of sex is secondary to what those partners are packing.

The issue isn't one of moralistic shading; I'm all about pussy in the same way I'm all about dick, albeit in different amounts, and as a non-idiot I'd never suggest that a girl who goes both ways should grow up and "choose already." What I will suggest is that this thing of "slut" — so easy now to take on and cast ourselves as, to very simply describe the activity of a lot of @!$%#ing — be reconsidered or clarified, because "slut" doesn't exist as an idea without its association with shame. This is why there's no original analog for a "male slut," why we have to dredge up horrible jargon like "himbo" and "man-whore." These all provocative-on-purpose jokes cannot be taken as seriously as to call a woman a "slut." They're less sincere, more ironic, somewhere along the lines of Megan Fox saying, "Suck my dick." (And we only say that because there's no good way for women to casually communicate their own aggression without bringing male genitals into it. But that's another discussion).

Personally, I have never agreed with the concept or definition of "sluttiness".

The double standard as it applies to men is hypocritical and unsupportable. For a man to be cheered for copulation and a woman to be labeled is absurd. Dating back to various ridiculous social or religious ideals of virginity and "purity".

In fact, some of the more sexually active women I know are very self aware, confident and empowered by their sexuality.

The word "slut" only has connotation in a patriarchal society that assumes men have the right to control and define women's sexuality.

A society that assumes women are in charge of their own sexual choices and do not have to be a certain sexual status in order to be desirable to men doesn't need to use negative labels.

This prejudice against women is still in existence. Pretending it isn't doesn't make us be the one who needs to get real.

Hmmm...according to the article, you have to feel shame to be a slut. Would you disagree with that then?

Thanks for loving me simply because I am a woman. Some days, I really need to hear that.

My general definition for a slut is someone who has no respect for themselves or others. Example - a small percentage of the women on "The Bad Girls Club" show.

I've never watched that. Are you applying it to them on a sexual basis or just a general lack of class?

Their lack of class. In this current season they went to a club and one of the girls was dancing around - if it could be called "dancing" - and showing her panties to everyone in the entire club.

Lolwut? to this entire article. A queer woman can feel sexual shame just as a straight woman can feel no shame whatsoever. But you didn't need me to type that out. No further comment.

"Suck my dick." (And we only say that because there's no good way for women to casually communicate their own aggression without bringing male genitals into it. But that's another discussion).

I'm classy. When I'm pissed I tell people they can lick my clit. I even have a lovely female equivalent hand gesture to the "jack off" motion. Yep @!$%#in' classy. ;)

    And according to this article:

Well I sure spend time in the kitchen so...

Interesting history of the word. I don't spend much time in the kitchen, so....but if I did try to make bread, I'd probably end up with a lot of "slut's pennies." LOL.

Well. I love women (one in particular)...I don't usually refer to any woman as a slut...I will call one a player though.

Has anyone ever heard of a man being called a "whore" or a "slut"? This is a double standard that belongs in the past. Everyone has a right to their own sexuality.

Religious nutters - the people who often call women who sleep around "sluts" but ignore it when men do it - still live in the past.
