After 12 weeks, those who drank water before meals had lost 15.5 pounds, compared to 11 pounds for the non-water drinkers, a nearly 30 percent difference.

The researchers got the idea for the weight-loss program from their prior research, which found that when middle-aged and older adults drank water before meals, they ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories at the meal

Wow, I need to be a researcher and get paid to do studies on things we already know. This has been known for decades. It is recomended in many many diet programs.

the only thing I see wrong with it is that water will dilute the digestive juices in the stomach possibly slowing the process.

I suppose that it does slow the proces of digestion which might possibly make a person feel full longer. I like to feel my food leave my stomach fast so I eat a lot of raw foods. I don't drink anything when I eat usually. I think that keeps me weighing the right weight. I only drink water thru out the day.

If you're eating raw foods, then you wouldn't absorb as many calories anyway. They are harder to digest, so fewer calories are absorbed. That's in addition to the fact that you are undoubtedly not using high calorie, fatty dressings, etc.

Feeling full longer does keep a person from eating again too soon. That's why so many diets emphasize proteins. They take longer to digest.

The water itself would expand the stomach and create the sensation of being full before you ever took a bite. That seems to be the operating theory behind this study. You eat less because you feel full before you eat.

For some people, diluting the stomach acid might be the best thing for them, having little to do with dieting. Those who overproduce stomach acid and/or have problems caused by stomach acid, diluting it might give much needed relief.

I think people who have so called too much acid do not eat enough raw foods. Cabbage is one of the best raw foods to eat and there are so many things that make it taste great. I love to eat mine with olive oil, lemmon juice, dill, salt and pepper, small amout of mayo and mustard yummmy and my tummy always feels good!

This is nothing new. Basically, you fill up on water before a meal.

Same thing for orange juice. Drinking a small glass of orange juice at a diner/restaurant before eating breakfast and you may not finish the meal. Other than filling you up before hand, the sugar in the orange juice tricks your body into feeling full sooner as well as give you a burt of energy.

No, it isn't new, but it was always in the category of "folk lore" until now.

Most people still do not know that if you don't drink enough water, you will experience hunger pains.

Drinking water before eating just bloats me so I can't eat, and then I end up gaining more weight than I'm trying to lose.
