A California gynecologist is being sued for branding a patient's name on her uterus using an "electrocautery device."

Dr. Red Alinsod removed Ingrid Paulicivic's uterus during an operation at his Orange County office in 2006, according to the complaint posted on The Smoking Gun's website. The Laguna Beach doctor carved "Ingrid" on the organ, according to the site, because he "did not want to get it confused with others."

Alinsod told the site that labeling of body parts in that manner is not typical. But, he said, he "felt comfortable putting her name on the uterus" since the 47-year-old hairdresser was a "good friend."

Paulicivic's attorney, Devan Mullins, told CNN.com that his client did not know her physician before consulting him for the operation. Paulicivic and her husband learned of the branding during a follow-up visit, the lawyer said.

During that visit, Paulicivic complained to Alinsod about burns to her leg that she suffered during the operation, Mullins told CNN.com. The doctor was looking at images that were taken during the operation, and the couple asked for copies.

"Alinsod hesitated to give them the photos," the attorney said, sparking the couple's suspicion that something was wrong....Later in the husband's office, the couple looked at the photos and were shocked to see "Ingrid" spelled out in inch-high letters on her uterus.

I don't get it.. why sue? its not like the uterus was still in her body. it was removed. and all he did was put her name on it. its not like he put his name on it or wrote some thing offensive on it. wheres the harm?

She also woke with burns on her leg, burns that were similar to what he did to her uterus.

His excuses are creepy, IMO. Why did he need to brand it to tell it apart from other uterii? Why would it be necessary to do it to hers if it wasn't necessary for other doctors to do it to other uterii? How was it a "friendly gesture" since she ordinarily wouldn't want to see it?

There is something very bizarre about him as a doctor. I wouldn't go to him. On his website, he proudly says his colleagues call him a "combat gynecologist." Why would he be proud of that? What's it even supposed to mean? He was stationed at air bases in the US, that's hardly combat duty. Besides, why would a woman need an gyn in a combat zone?

In another story on it revealed he took about fifty photos of himself doing it and clowning around in the operating room.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1311923/Doctor-sued-carving-patients-removed-uterus-friendly-gesture.html

She alleges the branding was done for 'no medically necessary purpose or reason' and that she somehow suffered burns on her legs while the uterus was being marked, according to her complaint.

Her lawyer Devan Mullins called the branding 'inexcusably bizarre behaviour', adding that the 50-year-old Dr Alinsod was 'fooling around and having fun'.

The couple then asked to see images Dr Alinsod was examining.

The gynaecologist provided the couple with about 50 digital images, Mr Mullins said, including photos showing the doctor writing on the uterus, as well as pictures of him holding the organ after 'Ingrid' was branded on it, one inch high and five inches long.

This is not behavior that I would want my doctor to engage in while I was under the knife. Wonder what else he's done while his patients are unconscious and helpless.

ok if he had burns on her legs I can see why shes suing. that makes sense

I don't know why he'd burn her name on to her uterus after it was removed but that on its own isnt horrible. its not like he was doing some thing perverse with it.

Sometimes uteri that have been removed are sent to a pathologist to be examined for evidence of disease.

Obviously, though, it has worked ok for years without the organs having to be "branded" with the patients' names.

This is just so odd.

This is really a weird story. Makes me wonder what has been done while I was "out" during a procedure.

Hopefully nothing inappropriate. I suspect this guy is the odd man out, but what I have to wonder is why his surgery team didn't report him and if they've been silent about other things he's done that were inappropriate. I hope they are being thoroughly questioned.

Good point about the rest of the surgery team Loretta.
